As the trends continue to shift at consumer whims, those
in pet food packaging agree that listening to the market is key
to present and future success.
"We're really trying to understand our customer's
consumer," said Rebecca Casey, senior director of marketing
with TC Transcontinental. "As we build our strategic plans
moving forward, we'll start looking at: really, what are
those consumer-convenient features we need to be putting
on [packaging] to really differentiate ourselves and our
customers in the marketplace and on the shelf? That's what
we're trying to do with our current market research."
In such a fast-changing market, it can be easy to get caught
up in the latest and greatest trends. But there's also something
to be said for riding along and seeing how the newest ideas
play out in other segments of the industry.

"Sometimes what happens with trends is, the trends come
out, and the packaging industry is moving faster than the
private label manufacturers, or the manufacturers of the food,
can manage the production of those bags," said Hepburn.
"Having the machinery to manage all of that is not always easy
to do, or it's expensive. And the machines that are out there - if
you're trying to find that machine that does all of it, you get that
'jack of all trades, master of none' kind of machine.
"As we continue to launch new trends, it may not always
be best for the people who are actually packaging the product.
When everything is said and done, pet food is about tonnage.
It's still about how much product you can move out." ■
