these raw categories in the years
Sales have gone up, along with
the number of products in pet
food stores, Lange said. Kibble+ is
now sold in the majority of stores,
followed by freeze-dried and raw
In the five years leading up
to October 2017, sales of raw
pet foods more than doubled,
according to GfK data first
reported by Pet Business. Numerically, that's a jump from US$64
million in 2013 to US$195 million
in 2017. Frozen raw pet food sales
grew 15.9 percent between 2016
and 2017. Likewise, the number
of pet food retailers carrying raw
diets has grown to 69 percent,
with an average 35 items per location, up from 50 percent and 19
items in 2013.
"I think that overall interest in
raw diets is increasing," said Elisa
Katz, DVM, of Holistic Veterinary
Center. "Cost appears to be the
main limiting factor."
Pet owners may balk at
doubling or tripling their pet food
bill to buy raw foods, she said. She
believes interest in raw diets will
continue, though she hopes costs
can come down.
Whole prey diets as a
trend in raw pet food
Interest in raw pet food may
relate to human food philosophies.
Packaged Facts analysts wrote in
Pet Food in the US, 13th edition
that the human trend of paleo- and
ancestral-diets has translated into a
driving force behind raw pet foods.
Beyond raw, the analysts noted
that the ancestral theme has fueled
interest in whole prey diets.
